Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first TV roles were two appearances as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mom. But her parents would not allow her to act until she was an adult due to the effects stress would have on their daughter. Perry was shy in high-school and didn't act. Her first acting experience was at Northwestern University to gain friends when she transferred from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, relocated in New York in search of television roles. Her small part was in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, homesickness led her to California for theater roles. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway together in The Other Place, in 2013. The show featured her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 in The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a lead role in nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's show The Family. In 2017, Perry had a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. Also, she was cast on The CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. Despite her family link to the character she received the role through an audition.
